I LOVE NY 15 of 28 Places to Visit

So with the celebration of my hot new series Christopher Street being released in only two weeks, I had to pay tribute to the real street Christopher Street. This street is the mother and the inspiration of our entire writing and development team.
Christopher Street is a street in the West Village neighborhood of the New York City borough of Manhattan. It is the continuation of 9th St. west of the intersection with 6th Ave. The Stonewall Inn is located on Christopher Street, and, therefore, the street and was at the center of New York's gay rights movement in the late 1970s. To this day the street serves as a symbol of gay pride.
Christopher Street is the oldest street in the West Village, as it ran along the south boundary of Admiral Sir Peter Warren's estate, which abutted the old Greenwich Road (now Greenwich Avenue) to the east and extended north to the next landing on the North River, at present-day Gansevoort Street. The street was briefly called Skinner Road after Colonel William Skinner, Sir Peter's son-in-law. The street received its current name in 1799, when the Warren land was acquired by Warren's eventual heir, Charles Christopher Amos. Charles Street remains, but Amos Street is now 10th Street.

Our Gay Melrose Place is Christopher Street!

Christopher Street is in the heart of the West Village or as many people know it as Greenwich Village. In the village you can have quite an experience you can witness all types of men, women, a few children, young, old, big, or small, and not to mention gay. Yes gay, The Village is a Gay Capitol of the world, in fact in this particular neighborhood you can shop, eat, and explore nothing but gayness. That’s why Christopher Street chooses to hang out there, no not the street name, but the person… Christopher Dewayne Street, however his friends call him Chris for short.
Christopher Street is originally from Memphis Tennessee, but now he resides in the Big Apple where he is learning new and exciting things everyday. With Chris you can expect anything he is fashion forward and fashionably dysfunctional, he might be a boy today and a full grown woman on tomorrow; you either love him, hate him, or both. Within his friend circle you meet the loyal wife Jharemy, the cry baby Ashton, and the diva of all times Miss Shawn.

Through the lives of Chris and his diverse group of friends we see the challenges that four young gay men face while being young gay minorities. Each character has their own individual struggle that affects their lives within their friend circle and the world. These young men deal with troubles that range from relationship issues, sexual identity, self-love, abuse, HIV/AIDS, and acceptance not only from the world, but from themselves. Chris, Jharemy, Ashton, and Shawn are bridging the gap of lacked knowledge by enlightening the world with the truth of being a young gay adult.

Inspired by shows such as "Beverly Hills 90210", "Melrose Place", and "Dawsons Creek", this drama aims to fit in the growing genre of teen shows, yet provide outstanding knowledge that will influence young people positively. This comedic drama is appealing to the 16-35 year old demographic, however anyone can satisfy anyone who wants an entertainment experience. Black Pride Times Two

Sharp contrasts in attendance, organization of Black Prides in NYC
Written by Nathan James
The summer of 2008 was a difficult time for the LGBT community of color in New York City. Following the executive-management collapse at People Of Color in Crisis (POCC), the annual Black Gay Pride Weekend, Pride In The City, was abruptly canceled the day before it was scheduled to begin. Thousands of people arrived at the venues for PITC, only to find no events, and no explanations. It was therefore a topic of great interest as to whether 2009 would see any Black Pride events at all. Much to our surprise, there were two Black
Gay Prides in NYC during the past two weekends.
The first of these was Jubilation, organized by Lee Soulja and sponsored by Gay Men Of African Descent (GMAD). Held during the traditional Pride In The City [first] weekend in August, Jubilation was put together on very short notice, but it was quite successful. Beginning with a reception on Friday, July 31, a picnic Saturday in Commodore Barry Park, and ending on Sunday, August 2, with the Black Gay Expo, it was a tour-de-force. On Sunday, there were screen presentations of Christopher Street TV, and a stage show with a lineup of rappers, poets and literary figures, hosted by actor and comedian Reginald L. Barnes. Among the performers were songstress Chelly, rappers King Jabbar, Baron, and Eric Joppy, male impersonators Dred Gerestant and Stefon Royce, eye-candy dancer Marck Angel, authors Nathan James and Renair Amin, and Out Music producer and singer Deepa Soul.
A Mr. Jubilation model search contest was also held, with $200, and a spot on black gay author Blair Poole's next book cover going to the audience-chosen winner. The overriding theme of Jubilation was a celebration of LGBT people of color, and this was carried off to good effect by the organizers, with centrally-located venues, positive themes, and, as Lee Soulja stated, "a strong message of self-love and HIV prevention". Jubilation closed out the following weekend with Fire Island Black Out as its official beach party. Attendees generally agreed that all of the Jubilation events lived up to their billing. It is clear that Lee and the Jubilation staff are off to a good start.
A week after Jubilation held its Manhattan events, a new HIV/AIDS outreach organization held several events under the familiar Pride In The City (PITC) banner used by POCC in years past. The new group, Atlanta-based National AIDS Services and Education for Minorities (NAESM), opened its Brooklyn branch offices and began their PITC events with a reception and Grand Opening on Thursday, August 6. They hosted a catere
d reception in their Atlantic Avenue building, where attendees met CEO Rudolph Carn, Acting Executive Director Craig Cobb, and several other executive managers. They outlined NAESM's mission statement and goals, and engaged the community members in dialogue about ways to achieve their aims. The official PITC reception, Expressions, was held on Friday in Brooklyn, at Langston's, followed by a kickoff party at Secrets in Manhattan. The next day was NAESM's Family Day in The Park at Prospect Park. Attendance at all of the PITC events was sparse, possibly a result of poor publicity, no booked performers, and the overshadowing of Jubilation the week before. A planned Beach Party on Sunday, August 9, was a washout due to stormy weather. Still, NAESM organizers pronounced PITC a success, and Director Craig Cobb insisted "our events will be bigger and better next year."
2009 will be remembered as the year Black Pride returned to New York City in full force, with Manhattan venues (a first for Black Gay Prides in NYC), dedicated community and artistic people engaging to celebrate our diversity and beauty, and twice as many opportunities for LGBT people of color to be out and PROUD. Long may this continue to be so.

The Modern Renaissance Man: DWIGHT O'NEAL

Gay men of color (and everyone else) will find a lot to love in Christopher Street, the groundbreaking new show from model/actor/producer/handsome charmer DWIGHT O’NEAL
INSTINCT: Give us a glimpse of your entertainment industry resume, please.
DWIGHT O’NEAL: Call me a Renaissance Man—fashion, writing, producing, directing, modeling, acting, singing, dancing, rapping, hosting, promoting!
Whew! Your most recent venture is Christopher Street: The Series.
I was inspired to create it to showcase positive role models for the young LGBT community. When I was growing up, I did not have an openly gay person to admire or seek advice from. My characters are great examples of why many of us move to the Big Apple—to reinvent themselves in pursuit of their true happiness.
Was your show inspired a little by another four-friends-in-NYC series?
Sex in the City was definitely a huge inspiration for my baby, but I’d say Christopher Street is the young, gay 90210, with a pinch more of comedy. Christopher Street is the title character who holds within him every characteristic that the infamous street in NYC possesses. As for Jharemy (the drama queen), Ashton (the quiet one) and Shawn (the diva), they keep "Street" from becoming a maniac. I mean, with so many characteristics, a guy could go insane. [Laughs]
Tell us, as a Southern boy turned New Yorker: who really took Manhattan: Jason or the Muppets?
The Muppets! They are far more powerful by ruling with sweetness and kindness.
So much of pop and LGBT culture seems dominated by white faces.
In the past, LGBT of color have not always been given equal representation, and when we have, it’s not always in a positive light. With Christopher Street, I want to tell the good, the bad and—most importantly—the funny. Noah’s Arc is the only major program I can think of that really focused on what it means to be an LGBT person of color, and now Christopher Street is carrying the torch.
What advice do you have for aspiring LGBT creators of color?
All things are possible. Just hang in there and know that you can have whatever you truly desire. Ask, believe and receive.
What's the most fun thing about creating, writing and producing your
own show?
I always get to decide how hot my character's boyfriends are! [Laughs]
Tell me about the "Beyond The Street” tour—the HIV/AIDS charity work you are spearheading that’s tied into the show.

CONGRATS DWIGHT ON ALL YOUR SUCCESS... INSTINCT IS A HUGE HONOR FOR PEOPLE OF COLOR!!!!
