DANCE KELLY ROWLAND DANCE

Interview with Papermag

The former Destiny’s Child member on her upcoming album, nude beaches and being a nerd.

By Alex Catarinella

If anyone is allowed to be a diva it’s Kelly Rowland, one third of what many consider the most successful all-female groups of all time, Destiny’s Child. But Rowland, now a solo artist with an eponymous, dance-heavy forthcoming album boasting production by David Guetta and Dr. Luke, is an unassuming, poised woman who isn’t fazed by the “bullshit that comes with the territory.” The video for first single “Commander,” which features Rowland rocking superhero-esque looks as she belts out soaring vocals, is further proof that she’s no longer the cute teenage girl sharing a chorus. But this isn’t the new-and-improved Kelly Rowland. Over the phone in Paris, the 29-year-old told PAPERMAG that this is simply Kelly Rowland being Kelly Rowland — a self-professed Intervention-watching nerd with dreams of frolicking on the beach naked, and who considers moments on the tour bus with “the girls” to be more special than winning a Grammy.

Now that’s our kind of superstar.

A lot of artists are moving toward a futuristic, dance-heavy sound. Why were you influenced to go this direction?

I spent about a year of my life in Europe really listening to a whole bunch of Europeans DJs and hearing dance music a lot on the radio and really loving it. But I didn’t really think that I would do a dance record until l went out in the South of France and David Guetta was spinning at a club. Listening to him was just crazy. I heard the track “When Love Takes Over” and I asked if I could take it to London to write lyrics to it. And so we wrote “When Love Takes Over” and it was my first introduction to dance music. Then I went to Europe to promote the record with David and it was a whole other monster. It’s really a culture and I love it….

Sex (O'NEAL) APPEAL

As spring rapidly arrives the clothes are getting thinner and the hormones are racing. I recently had the opportunity to star in a safer sex Public Service Announcement that promotes using protection during sexual acts and that places emphases on the effeminate male taking control over the situation and forces the masculine male to wrap up before continuing their sexual pleasure. The concept was developed by Darrin B. Maxwell in order to break the stereotypes that suggest that effeminate males are weaker and allow masculine personalities to force bad decisions upon them.

This PSA was apart of the OutSpoken DVD Series and is seen on VOL 3 along with Vogue Evolution of America’s Best Dance Crew. Connect to Protect- Check it out!

Notes from Nathan: New Moon

t's a new moon and with new moons come new beginnings.  I was recently told that in order to move on, I will have to let go of a few things that may be hard to release.  People can be toxic.  Oh my goodness, I learned that at a recent event that I hosted.  It made me wonder just how bitter people are and how they will do anything in their power to rain on someone else's parade.  No more! I am tired of holding up the white flag playing truce and always the peacemaker.  This is for the birds!  I'm out of here.  As 2009 packs up and closes up shop, so am I.  I need new energy.  I need more success and the only way I will achieve it is to go after it HARD CORE.  Watch out world, Nathan Seven Scott is about to run 2010!  Along with the help of some true believers in me and my gifts.  There are people who want to see me succeed, and I thank all of you from the top of my heart.  Please continue to keep watch on me and support my endeavors.  I promise you won't be disappointed about what gets delivered in 2010.

I am excited to show you this amazing video.  Full of talent, full of color, full of energy.  These are the type of young adults that I will be coaching next year and I cannot wait!

Crew Bio: Vogue Evolution, New York, New York
Dashaun Williams, Devon Webster, Malechi Williams, Leiomy Maldonado, Jorel Rios...
From the underground ballrooms of New York City the members of Vogue Evolution have set out to spread their unique dancing style into the mainstream. The crew comprises of some of the most respected dancers in New York's "Vogue" house/ballroom scene, which has been around since the Harlem Renaissance. The guys, who were once competitors in the underground "ball" scene, decided to take ABDC by storm and create a performing group under the direction of Devon and Dashaun. What they came up with was the best of the best in their scene. But dancing isn't the only thing these guys do. They have a hand in educating their community on HIV/AIDS and the importance of getting tested.

The crew is a dance power house group. Each member has surpassed incredible feats at young ages, from numerous awards to appearances on television. More notably, Pony choreographed for Mariah Carey and Dashaun is even the creator of the "5,000" dance move. Why does Vogue Evolution think they'll take the ABDC crown? "Our style has been replicated by so many people that do not execute the specific steps correctly," Dashuan says. "We as a crew selected the best from the scene to show the mainstream where it's from."
