Hello good people. Two weeks ago, I traveled to DC to perform with Brave Soul Collective as we honored National Black HIV/AIDS awareness day through performance art and advocacy. I performed "Pump-Plie-Jump" from my book SHADOWS&LIGHTS and I must say, I had some magical moments sharing this piece. The entire performance touched, moved, and inspired many as there were stories from not only the gay male perspective, but the straight male and female, and the lesbian perspective. This night was so inclusive and so transforming.
Brave Soul Collective is gearing up for a reprise of the show during the International AIDS Conference, which takes place this summer in Washington, DC. Stay tuned as we update you with all details.
For now, please enjoy and share "Pump-Plie-Jump". I would love to hear your thoughts and I would love for you to share this with someone whom you feel will benefit from it.
“Jones’ minimalist writing, recalling in some ways E. E. Cummings, carves out finely designed pictographs for the mind to explore. The depictions in his poems of the Momma figure are so endearing and heart-warming, I could almost smell the home cooked meal on the stove as I read the often monosyllabic lines on the page. What Jones can do with one syllable, takes many at least a dozen to get across.”
-Pandora Scooter, CEO Fushicho Entertainment & Spoken Word Artist
"Jones' prose pops and percolates, possessing an immediacy and energy so electric you'd swear you were at a poetry slam. And, as with any riveting performance, you will be on the edge of your seat, captured by the rapture of Jones' "a-to-the-men" testimonies on love and lust, hurt and healing, sadness and celebration. Long before you get to the very last stanza, you will be giving this intensely moving collection--and Jones--a standing ovation."
- James Earl Hardy, author of the bestselling B-Boy Blues series
"Cornelius is simply masterful with the poetic word in Shadows and Lights; he writes with a fire in his soul that burns in the rhythm of his prose. His testimonies are fearless and brilliantly unapologetic. Through his writing, we share the passion of his triumphs and feel the heartache of his pains. He teaches us not only how to live, but how to love - especially ourselves! Kudos to a remarkable man on his extraordinary work!"
- Lee Hayes, author of The Bad Seed and Passion Marks
Shadows and Lights is a moving, intimate portrayal of the life of poet and playwright Cornelius Jones Jr. In this heartbreakingly beautiful book, Cornelius fashions images both brave and delicate to describe growing up black and gay in Washington D.C., the decay of the body and the rage of living with HIV. But it is the writer's honesty that lifts these words off the page. This is experiential poetry at its finest. You must listen to the music of Cornelius Jones Jr.
, Aguilera plays a small town girl with big town dreams who moves to L.A. where she gets a job as a waitress at The Burlesque Lounge with dreams of one day performing. Blah, blah, blah, she becomes a star. I’m sure you’ve heard the story a thousand times, since it as old as Cher. We’ll have to wait until November, however, to see if it has aged as well. Continue reading to check out the poster.
Ali (Christina Aguilera) is a small-town girl with a big voice who escapes hardship and an uncertain future to follow her dreams to LA. After stumbling upon The Burlesque Lounge, a majestic but ailing theater that is home to an inspired musical revue, Ali lands a job as a cocktail waitress from Tess (Cher), the club’s proprietor and headliner. Burlesque’s outrageous costumes and bold choreography enrapture the young ingenue, who vows to perform there one day.
Soon enough, Ali builds a friendship with a featured dancer (Julianne Hough), finds an enemy in a troubled, jealous performer (Kristen Bell), and garners the affection of Jack (Cam Gigandet
), a bartender and fellow musician. With the help of a sharp-witted stage manager (Stanley Tucci) and gender-bending host (Alan Cumming), Ali makes her way from the bar to the stage. Her spectacular voice restores The Burlesque Lounge to its former glory, though not before a charismatic entrepreneur (Eric Dane) arrives with an enticing proposal…
Los Angeles Black Pride (LABP), the country’s first African-American LGBT Pride organization, along with GLO TV, America’s first urban LGBT TV network, have come together to produce Flip The Script Friday: LA Black Pride Film Festivaland Conference Seriesat the Radisson LAX Hotel in Los Angeles on Friday, July 2, 2010. This free program is part of the organization’s numerous events in celebration of its 22nd annual Pride event.
The film festival will include various independent films made by and about the African-American LGBT community, curated by filmmaker and GLO TV president Maurice Jamal. The highlight of the festival will be the hot topic conference Flipping The Script II: Beyond Homophobia in Black Hollywood, the second in a series of discussions about the often discreet world of homosexuality within the tight-lipped Black film and television community. Co-produced by openly gay writer Demetrius Bady as a follow up to his hugely successful conference Flipping The Script held earlier this year at the Writers Guild of America, Flipping The Script II will continue the discussion about the portrayal of African-American gay and lesbian characters in film and television and what role Black Hollywood plays in the positive and negative shaping of these characters. From Antonio Fargas’ drag diva Lindy in the 70s classic film Car Wash to Nicole Ari Parker’s Evie in The Incredibly True Adventures of 2 Girls in Love to Lafayette Reynolds of HBO’s vampire drama True Blood, Hollywood has produced a host of memorable characters that have been both praised and condemned for its depiction of the African-American LGBT community.
The evening’s discussion will also delve into such topics as the controversial issue of being “out” and Black in Hollywood and the cost of staying “in the closet;” the gains made by prominent African-American LGBT filmmakers, as well as the issue of homophobia within the black community as a whole. LABP hopes the event will encourage audience members to ask questions and to participate in the dialogue during this frank and open conversation.
Confirmed panelists include actor Doug Spearman(Noah's Arc), BET VP Austyn Biggers, GLO TV president and filmmaker Maurice Jamal(Dirty Laundry),screenwriter Jasmine Love(The District), filmmakers Faith Trimel (Family), Kanithea Powell (Finding Juliet) and GLAAD award-winners Quincy LeNear and Deondray Gossett(The DL Chronicles).
Founded in 1988, the non-profit LABP has a longstanding history of combating homophobia, providing L.A.-based events and programs throughout the year to the African-American LGBT community. Flip The Script Friday: LA Black Pride Film Festival and Conference Series is part of LABP’s week-long celebration (July 1-5) of Hollywood Wet & Wild, this year’s theme for the organization’s 22nd annual Pride event. The conference, Flipping The Script II, is co-sponsored by the Writer's Guild of America.

Overton Loyd (Pfunk artist), Toni Basil (Oh Mickey!), Lonnie Marshall (musician/Weapon of Choice)
Overton Loyd is an artist best known for creating the cover art for the Parliament album Motor Booty Affair. His style of art varies often from work to work, and can range from loose sketches and paintings to fully fleshed out pieces. He is a friend of George Clinton of Parliament, and most of the subjects for his art are either Clinton or Parliament.
Loyd's contribution to Motor Booty Affair was considerable. The original LP was released in several different configurations, each taking advantage of Loyd's unique talents. The main release consisted of a gate-fold album cover, with Loyd's artwork on the front and back covers. His illustrations included cartoon portraits of some of the "characters" mentioned in the songs on the album, including "Mr. Wiggles the Worm." There was also a picture disk, with Loyd's illustration printed directly on the vinyl LP. Finally, there was a special edition that included cardboard cutout figures featuring Loyd's cartoon illustrations of most of the characters mentioned in the songs.
When Parliament went on tour in support of Motor Booty Affair, Loyd designed costumes for members of the band based on the cartoon illustrations he had made for the album cover. In 1977, Loyd illustrated a comic book that was included in Parliament's Funkentelechy Vs. the Placebo Syndrome, portraying the epic battle between Sir Nose D’Voidoffunk and Starchild (see P-Funk mythology). In the cartoon, which echoes the lyrics to the songs on the album, Sir Nose, who is determined not to dance, is ultimately defeated by Starchild, who is equipped with his Bop Gun, when Starchild shines a Flash Light on him.
Loyd was also responsible for the artwork on Bootsy's Rubber Band's This Boot Is Made for Fonk-N and Parliament's Gloryhallastoopid (Or Pin the Tail on the Funky), both released in 1979.
Loyd was recognized by Billboard for "Best Use of Computer Graphics" for his 1982 video for George Clinton's "Atomic Dog."
Loyd was the featured caricaturist on the American television game show Win, Lose or Draw.
In November 2006, Loyd was the guest art director for two episodes of the animated television series Class of 3000 on Cartoon Network.
This month is international month at The Future and we look at World Football aka Soccor.
The 2010 FIFA World Cup will be the 19th FIFA World Cup, the premier international football tournament. It is scheduled to take place between June 11th and July 11, 2010 in South Africa. The 2010 FIFA World Cup will be the culmination of a qualification process that began in August 2007 and involved 204 of the 208 FIFA national teams. As such, it matches the 2008 Summer Olympics as the sports event with the most competing nations.
This will be the first time that the tournament has been hosted by an African nation, after South Africa beat Morocco and Egypt in an all-African bidding process. This decision left the Oceania Football Confederation as the only confederation yet to host the FIFA World Cup. Italy is the defending champions. The draw for the finals took place on 4 December 2009 in Cape Town.
The FIFA World Cup, occasionally called the Football World Cup, but usually referred to simply as the World Cup, is an international football competition contested by the men’s national teams of the members of Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA), the sport's global governing body. The championship has been awarded every four years since the first tournament in 1930, except in 1942 and 1946 when it was not contested because of World War II.
The current format of the tournament involves 32 teams competing for the title at venues within the host nation(s) over a period of about a month – this phase is often called the World Cup Finals. A qualification phase, which currently takes place over the preceding three years, is used to determine which teams qualify for the tournament together with the host nation(s). The World Cup is the most widely-viewed sporting event in the world, with an estimated 715.1 million people watching the 2006 final.
During the 18 tournaments that have been held, seven nations have won the title. Brazil is the only team to have played in every tournament and have won the World Cup a record five times. Italy is the current champions and has won four titles, and Germany is next with three. The other former champions are Uruguay, winners of the inaugural tournament and Argentina, with two titles each, and England and France with one title each.
The 2014 World Cup will be held in Brazil.
The bidding process for the 2018 and 2022 FIFA World Cups is currently under way. These will be the 21st and 22nd editions of the FIFA World Cup. The bidding procedure to host both the 2018 and 2022 FIFA World Cup began in January 2009, and national associations had until 2 February 2009 to register their interest. The executive committee of FIFA will announce their decision on the two editions in December 2010. Candidates have applied for either or both of the 2018 and 2022 tournaments, but the 2022 hosts will not be chosen from the same continent as the 2018 hosts.
Nine individual nations registered their intention to bid with FIFA by the February 2009 deadline: Australia, England, Indonesia, Japan, Qatar, Mexico, Russia, South Korea and the United States. Additionally Belgium and the Netherlands registered to bid together, as have Portugal and Spain.[4] Mexico however later withdrew its bid. FIFA confirmed the list of bidders in March, with Indonesia, South Korea and Qatar bidding for 2022 only.
In October 2007, FIFA ended the continental rotation policy. Instead the last two tournament host confederations are ineligible, leaving Africa ineligible for 2018 and South America ineligible for both 2018 and 2022. Other factors in the selection process include the number of suitable stadia, and their location across candidate nations. Due to the number of bids received by FIFA, this World Cup is expected to be the most hotly contested bid ever, mainly due to the revision in FIFA's rotation policy. As a result, Sepp Blatter has said that FIFA may follow the International Olympic Committee and have a preliminary elimination of bids some time before the final ceremony.

Brandy has settled the last of her lawsuits in connection with the December 2006 car crash on a Los Angeles freeway.
TMZ.com is reporting that the singer-actress has come to an agreement with the parents of Awatef Aboudihaj, the 38-year-old who was killed in a four-car freeway crash on Dec. 30, 2007. Also, SanDiego6.com is reporting that Brandy has settled with Aboudihaj's widower.
The California Highway Patrol ruled the accident was Brandy's fault because she failed to prevent her Land Rover from hitting the car in front of her when traffic slowed down. The singer avoided criminal charges following a year-long police investigation, but she was sued by Aboudihaj's widower Marouane Hdidou, their two children, and crash survivor Mallory Ham.In July, Brandy agreed to pay Aboudihaj's two children $300,000 each while Ham - who suffered facial injuries in the crash - settled for an undisclosed amount. Hdidou rejected his part of a $1.2 million settlement back in February.
Terms of last week's settlement were not disclosed.
