Grindin’ for Ubuntu Education Fund
As GrindCity gears up for their first New York City show since partnering with Ubuntu Education Fund, the connection between the ubuntu philosophy and the band has become readily apparent. While GrindCity has always been mindful of the messages they put out, a look inside their process reveals that collaboration is a core value and one of the keys to the group’s success. According to J-O, “we all equally feel that even though we can come up with a great idea individually, it’s the combination of everybody's talent that makes the song grow beyond everyone's limitations.”
Cooperation = inspiration for GrindCity. “Some of our best songs came about from us calling each other on the phone saying "Yo! Listen to this!" Kev and Gab exchange ideas via text messages like kids trading baseball cards. It’s like an itch that needs to be scratched.” Their passion for partnership shines through in their music.
GrindCity fully recognizes that the success of their live shows requires the participation of an all important collaborator; the crowd. What sets them apart from other bands is the gratitude and appreciation they have for each audience member. “Even if there are only three people in the spot, including the sound guy, we want to make sure that they still get a full performance!” jokes Gab.
After rave reviews of their opening sets for bands from N.E.R.D. to Living Colour, it’s highly unlikely that a concertgoer will have much elbow room, but that won’t be an issue for a New York City crowd. GrindCity’s intense live show is not only a testament to the spirit of ubuntu, but quite simply a show not to be missed.
