Now Live: First National Deal Site For Gay Men

Groupon- and LivingSocial-type, just-in-time daily deal sites are growing like blue plate specials, but, until now, there has been no such Web-shopping service devoted to the most Web-savvy, most affluent, well-travelled and impulse-buying consumers: gay men. A new site, DirectMale.com, hopes to get first-mover advantage.

The Washington, D.C.-based online voucher company, which launched just under a month ago, is selling upscale goods and services featuring local and national offers from bars, clubs, restaurants, spas, salons, travel, hotels, cruises and much more.

While the Direct Male site is new, the service isn't. The 20-year-old company actually started as a direct-mail business with a 100,000-person opt-in database, where participating households got "card decks" in their mailboxes, with offers from the likes of Jim Beam Brands, the National Gay and Lesbian Travel Association, British Airways and GlaxoSmithKline.

"We are the first national player in this space," says founder and CEO Andrew Isen. "Last summer, when we began to put everything together, we thought we would do it local but the gay male market is so strong that we opted to go nationally out of the bag." He says the niche market, because of the liquidity of its population and its willingness to part with cash for the right products, has become a much-coveted segment in the last two decades. "And because gay men are brand loyal, [marketers] know the value of targeting this segment."

Isen says that rather than focus on deals-of-the-day the site will have a regular rotation of timed offers. Isen says they are much more affluent than the general market, with the gay male consumer earning nearly double the average household income with 70% more disposable income. The company says that in the U.S. there are about 12.3 million gay men over the age of 18, and 93% of them are active online consumers.

He says among products and services that are popular with gay men -- bespoke clothing that would otherwise be hard to find, skin care, and personalized household products and apparel, for example -- travel is one of the biggest. "We are offering, for example, a trip to a gay-friendly resort in Nicaragua. Travel is one of the biggest items and categories in the gay segment. And it always has been." He points out that roughly 80% of gay men have passports, which is double national average. They travel substantially more than any other niche; the International Gay and Lesbian Travel Association has 3,000 members. "Today, every airline and hotel chain has gay-specific services. Winn Las Vegas, for example, has a concierge dedicated to gay clientele."

Per Isen, gay men are, per capita, on the Internet more than any other niche segment. Direct Male is mobile optimized. "The newest studies show that gay male consumers -- over 40% -- will only use mobile smart devices to make web purchases. They will only use smartphones or tablets."

Zolra's Corner: Web Series Are Taking Over

Hello everyone. It is so good to be back. After turning into a computer addict, I can't help but notice one thing. Online web series are spreading like wild fire. Everywhere I go, I discovered new web series that has just been created.

I am currently working on a few screenplays that are going to be turned into movies real soon. However, web series are in my mind nonstop. So if you are a fan of web series, you will love these shows. These are my top five favorite web series.

1. Drama Queenz

Drama Queenz is about three struggling actors named Jeremiah, Davis, and Preston living their lives in New York. While going through the journey of becoming the best, they begin to balance career with the mates and friends in their lives. Below is Season 2 Episode 1

2. No Strings Attached
No Strings Attached is about two characters named Andy and Claire. Andy is looking for Mr. Right and Claire doesnt believe in monogamy. After meeting Justin at a dating place, Andy hopes he's the one he's meant to be with. Whereas, Claire gets caught up between Ethan and Jonathan. A web series about love and unconventional relationships. Below is Season 1 Episode 1

3. In The Moment

In The Moment is about starting an open, honest conversation among gay guys in the Los Angeles area about these types of decisions. Below is Season 1 Episode 8.

4. Anacostia

Anacostia follows the lives of four friends as they navigate through Love, Deceit, Betrayal, Sex and Death with a season finale that will leave your mouths open. I have seen the season finale, and it is heartbreaking. But you gotta start from the beginning too.

5. Gig
Gig offers a behind-the-scenes look into a Los Angeles-based advertising agency, where viewers participate in month-long campaigns for real brands. Although the audience has multiple chances to participate in the series, the greatest prize is to star in each months commercial. Toward the end of every campaign, viewers are asked to upload video responses auditioning for the role by reading provided scripts (available for download off of the channel page). The person chosen will be flown out to Hollywood to shoot their commercial and appear in an episode of gig!

For me, Gig is kind of like a online reality show. But I seriously don't know if it's fiction or reality. What do you think? Watch all the episodes before you suggest.

6. Gay's Anatomy

Gay's Anatomy is a show about three young urologists who aren't afraid to get their hands dirty. Mark, Marc and Jim are competing to get on top at the hospital. But when things get personal, will a passion for prostates and an instinct for the male anatomy be enough?

7. The Guild

The Guild is an award-winning online sitcom about the lives of an online guild "The Knights of Good", with each webisode 3–8 minutes long. The first episode was posted July 27, 2007. It is broadcast on The Guild's official website, on iTunes and Zune Marketplace as a podcast, effinfunny.com and YouTube, and is available for download from the Xbox Live Marketplace. The show follows the life of Codex, the healer of The Knights of Good, who attempts to lead a normal life after one of her guildmates shows up on her doorstep.
