4 Colored Boys Like Me

I am not a racist.

There's a perfectly sound reason why my new project, Langston's, is subtitled "a film by (4) colored boys." Besides the obvious answer (it's a collaboration between four noted black and latino filmmakers), there's also a much more personal reason, dating back about 20 years to when I was a little colored boy myself (as my grandma would affectionately call me).

Back then, I would occasionally wet my bed at night. After such incidents I'd hide my gold-tinted "tighty whities" from my father, who would undoubtedly "whoop" me if he found them. Nonetheless, despite my best efforts, he would sniff them out after they had festered for a few days in some ill-concealed location.

He would then call out for me in his ironically shrill, baritone voice, and, after a series of insults, proceed to beat me, accentuating verbally my various flaws with each lash. My worst offense, however, would be crying, because "black men don't cry," an adage he'd bark at me whenever my eyes started to well up. So I would just bite my lip until he was finished, then retire to my room and cry secretly into my pillow, all the while thinking, "I need help."

Of course, I didn't mean I needed to be rescued from my father's "tough love." Rather, I needed help controlling my compulsion to be me. I didn't want to be me. I hated me. "Me" needed help, and I knew no other little "colored" boys like me who could show me the way. So I looked to pop culture for guidance: music, movies, TV. Bill Cosby? No. Montel Williams? Denzel Washington? No. Flava Flav? Hell no. There was not one media personality or public figure that reflected me. I wasn't relevant. I didn't matter.

I grew up, cried a little less, and, as a teen, became even more obsessed with the idea of finding someone to connect with -- other little colored boys like me. I discovered this newfangled thing called "the Internet" at the library. I made new virtual "friends" and consequently put myself in unsafe situations, sexually and emotionally, just to feel something, to relate to someone. I thought that love manifested physically between a 41-year-old Italian bear and a 15-year-old little colored boy could fill a void, could help substitute for the lack of love I felt for myself; it didn't.

I recall going to my mom a few months later and having her take me for my first HIV test, and crying, and then her crying, and then us crying again when the results came back negative. And I remember thinking I would never be self-destructive in that way again.

I must admit, however, that the lure of boys and booze to fill a void still lingers, to gain instant gratification to temporarily replace constant feelings of illegitimacy. And while this could, in truth, be the story of anyone of any race, I find that my existence as a gay man of color has rarely been validated; how I felt as a little colored boy looking to the media for validation still resounds today as a grown colored man. Aside from a slew of big black men in pretty dresses (RuPaul, Tyler Perry, Eddie Murphy, Martin Lawrence, Jamie Foxx, and Flip Wilson, all of whom I admire, but almost all of whom aren't gay) and some admirable attempts by a few noted filmmakers (Patrick Ian Polk, Maurice Jamal, and Roger Omeus, to name a few), there has not been a constant presence of gay men of color in mainstream media or popular culture.

Coupled with negative societal perspectives on homosexuality, the diminished presence of black-themed entertainment that was so pervasive in the '80s and '90s, and the Euro-centric focus of most gay entertainment and advertising, it's not so surprising that self-destructive actions among young gay black men are on the rise, with the CDC reporting that new infections among said demographic saw a dramatic increase of 48 percent in recent years, with 59 percent of those carrying the disease unaware of their status.

As a filmmaker, I see the problem as a matter of value. Television and film are a reflection of reality, barometers of what is real and relevant. If you do not see "you" reflected, subconsciously or not, a feeling of irrelevance can set in. And when this occurs, it can devalue your existence, especially when you are at a younger, more impressionable age and trying to find yourself.

So what happens to little colored boys like me? The ones growing up with no one to look up to? The ones who wet the bed and can't make their fathers proud? The ones who hate themselves and cry at nights? The ones sleeping with older men to fill a void or sleeping with just anyone with disregard for their lives or personal health? Are they as lucky as I was, or do they become a statistic?

My resolution for 2012 is to create more works for boys like me and turn feelings of irrelevance into feelings of self-love and inner peace. This resolution is reflected in the aforementioned film Langston's, a piece that spans the gamut of the LGBTQ experience for people of color. After a year of development, the four of us have created a singular film comprising four interconnected stories set in a gay, urban nightclub in Brooklyn.

The film is unapologetically colored, daringly gay, and yet strikingly universal. More importantly, it will forever be a testament to the worth and beauty of a community, something for little colored boys to look to so that they rarely, if ever, feel the emptiness I once felt.

May your stories be told, no matter what race, religion, orientation or creed, as well. You deserve it. You have value.

Through Jan. 14, we are accepting donations for this passion project on Kickstarter. We welcome your support for our love letter to little colored boys like us.

LANGSTON'S a film by (4) colored boys needs your support... GIVE TODAY!!!

"I went down to the river,
I set down on the bank.
I tried to think but couldn't,
So I jumped in and sank."
― Langston Hughes

WHAT
Whether old or young, masc or fem, prep or urban, we all share an attraction that draws us together and forces us to see the similarities in our differences...and in the club, there's no hiding from this truth.

An unparalleled collaboration between 4 noted filmmakers, LANGSTON'S is a modern portrait of gay men of color who are linked together by a tragic act.

A film by and 4 boys of color.

WHY
Together we can stop other young men of color from sinking.

Novo Film Project is dedicated to examining the questions latent in the LGBT community of color. In every project, Novo Film Project builds upon the contemporary and classic concerns and themes that remain timeless in order to introduce more "colorful" images in the cinematic landscape. In association with Off The Clock Productions, LANGSTON'S is the first feature length effort in achieving this goal.

In short, LANGSTON'S is a response to the diminishing presence of "colored folks" in mainstream film, a novel opportunity for us to tell our story and affect positive change within our community.

WHO
LANGSTON'S fuses the talents of 4 emerging, award-winning filmmakers:

Dane Harrington Joseph
Co-producer and writer of Drama Queenz, the hit comedy series about three friends and roommates dealing with life, love, and trying to make it in New York City. Now in its third season, the show has been presented at film festivals and pride events across the country, on many notable blogs and websites, and has a special partnership with BGCLive.com.

Dwight Allen O’Neal
Executive Producer/Creator/Writer of Christopher Street TV (now available through TLA Releasing) and the forthcoming spin-off series cockTALES. A notable blogger, celebrity make-up artist, and international GAYlebrity, Dwight’s work has featured in Vogue Magazine, TheFutureFoward.net, and various other hot spots across the world wide web.

Daniel Armando
Executive producer/director/writer, Boys Like You (winner “Best Male Short,” North Carolina Int’l Gay and Lesbian Film Festival) and vice president of development at Novo Film project.

James Peoples
BET/Urbanworld Screenwriting finalist and writer of the first novo film project, Where Truth Lies (Official Selection, North Carolina Int’l Gay and Lesbian Film Festival). James' work has also been featured in the NBC Shortcuts festival. James was also one of the recipients for Best Science Fiction film at the Terror Film Festival.

HOW
YOU can make this happen. Through your support, you can help give voice to emerging artists, a disenfranchised community, and the individuals within that may be sinking. By partnering with Novo Film Project and Off the Clock Productions, you will bring to life work by us, for ALL of us.

Give today.

GLO TV plugs in on September 3rd

The wait is over! THE FUTURE OF TELEVISION IS HERE!

GLO TV Network, the world’s only television network catering to the Urban LGBT community and it's allies, premieres Friday September 3rd 2010. To kick-off the event, GLO TV will host several events during Black Gay Pride in Atlanta, GA, culminating in a sneak preview of network’s biggest shows including: The Debut of Maurice Jamal’s “Friends & Lovers”, “Dating Dwight”, “Christopher Street”, “Gayest Sh-t Ever”, “Sex:2010”, "Living Life" and "Being Legendary" among more than 12 programs that will debut over Labor Day weekend.

“It is a long time coming, and something that the Urban LBGT community has wanted and deserves” said GLO TV President and filmmaker Maurice Jamal. “The premiere of this network is a labor of love rooted in the notion of providing a wide array of programming that shows our us in all our vibrant colors.”

Founded in 2010, GLO TV Network was the vision of Jamal, then the award-winning director of “Ski Trip” and “Dirty Laundry” who partnered with several key people in the entertainment and business world to create a network with wide ranging impacts. “This really is the People's Network,” Jamal said. “All across the country, I would meet people who wanted to see their experiences reflected on TV. The community asked for a place where they could see their loves, lives, challenges and success stories, and we took up that challenge“.

The network will be available through the web, cable and on-demand. It will debut first in the online space, and is a perfect place for the network, Jamal adds. "GLO TV is for everyone, so it was vital that anyone can turn us on, anywhere, anytime. The web allows us to deliver the first true TV network, to the whole nation, which is affordable, accessible and relevant".

“GLO is more than amazing TV programming, we have articles, national correspondents, news, and anything our community would be interested in seeing or knowing about. We want to be the one stop shop for the Urban LGBT community.”

THIS WEEKEND IN ATLANTA

Zolra's Corner: Web Series Are Taking Over

Hello everyone. It is so good to be back. After turning into a computer addict, I can't help but notice one thing. Online web series are spreading like wild fire. Everywhere I go, I discovered new web series that has just been created.

I am currently working on a few screenplays that are going to be turned into movies real soon. However, web series are in my mind nonstop. So if you are a fan of web series, you will love these shows. These are my top five favorite web series.

1. Drama Queenz

Drama Queenz is about three struggling actors named Jeremiah, Davis, and Preston living their lives in New York. While going through the journey of becoming the best, they begin to balance career with the mates and friends in their lives. Below is Season 2 Episode 1

2. No Strings Attached
No Strings Attached is about two characters named Andy and Claire. Andy is looking for Mr. Right and Claire doesnt believe in monogamy. After meeting Justin at a dating place, Andy hopes he's the one he's meant to be with. Whereas, Claire gets caught up between Ethan and Jonathan. A web series about love and unconventional relationships. Below is Season 1 Episode 1

3. In The Moment

In The Moment is about starting an open, honest conversation among gay guys in the Los Angeles area about these types of decisions. Below is Season 1 Episode 8.

4. Anacostia

Anacostia follows the lives of four friends as they navigate through Love, Deceit, Betrayal, Sex and Death with a season finale that will leave your mouths open. I have seen the season finale, and it is heartbreaking. But you gotta start from the beginning too.

Anacostia Episode One from Frank Jackson on Vimeo.

5. Gig
Gig offers a behind-the-scenes look into a Los Angeles-based advertising agency, where viewers participate in month-long campaigns for real brands. Although the audience has multiple chances to participate in the series, the greatest prize is to star in each months commercial. Toward the end of every campaign, viewers are asked to upload video responses auditioning for the role by reading provided scripts (available for download off of the channel page). The person chosen will be flown out to Hollywood to shoot their commercial and appear in an episode of gig!

For me, Gig is kind of like a online reality show. But I seriously don't know if it's fiction or reality. What do you think? Watch all the episodes before you suggest.

6. Gay's Anatomy

Gay's Anatomy is a show about three young urologists who aren't afraid to get their hands dirty. Mark, Marc and Jim are competing to get on top at the hospital. But when things get personal, will a passion for prostates and an instinct for the male anatomy be enough?

7. The Guild

The Guild is an award-winning online sitcom about the lives of an online guild "The Knights of Good", with each webisode 3–8 minutes long. The first episode was posted July 27, 2007. It is broadcast on The Guild's official website, on iTunes and Zune Marketplace as a podcast, effinfunny.com and YouTube, and is available for download from the Xbox Live Marketplace. The show follows the life of Codex, the healer of The Knights of Good, who attempts to lead a normal life after one of her guildmates shows up on her doorstep.

Zolra's Corner: In The Moment Returns

Even though I don't think about moving there, Los Angeles always looks interesting to me. I get most of my information from movies to Jackie Collins. There is a movie or tv show being filmed down there everyday. I have a crazy schedule. So I never have time to watch television. I almost forgot to watch Melrose Place 2.0 (The remake of the 1992 series). Because of that, I have drawn myself to online series. Original shows that premieres on the internet. I even watch episodes online that I miss on tv.

Thanks to that, I have become addicted to online series. I watch a variety of shows like The Guild, Drama Queenz, No Strings Attached, Gay's Anatomy and the upcoming show The Boys Who Brunch. Now I have added a new show to my list. I thought it was canceled months ago. When I saw a new episode a few days ago, I was like "THANK GOD."

For everyone, I recommend watching this show online called In The Moment. In The Moment is also about starting an open, honest conversation among gay guys in the Los Angeles area about these types of decisions. Below is the most recent episode of the show. If you want to watch more episodes, go to their youtube channel.

Zolra's Corner: Acknowledges and Support 11 Very Fascinating People For 2010

Hello everyone. Happy New Year! I am so happy that the new year has arrived. It's time for a change. As we continue throughout our own individual adventures, there are times when we look at other people's work, and it catches out eyes. That's how I felt throughout the year. There are a few individuals that I be inspired by every single day. And because of that, I would like to acknowledge these brilliant people for their large body of work. Let's start the countdown.

11. Alonzo Lerone

The way I stumbled upon you was very accidental. I was just done watching the 2009 BET Awards. So I suspected that videos of the awards show was going to be posted on Youtube. I was really astounded by Beyonce's performance, I wanted to see it again. Then I am browsing around the internet, and there was a picture taken from her performance. I clicked on the video, and it turned out to be one of your music reviews.

There was no judgement at all when I first noticed you. You are entertaining, funny, creative, and extremely good looking. I will continue watching your music reviews. You just keep on making informative comedy. We love you for that.

Below is one of my favorite videos from him.

10. B. Scott

B. Scott! Once again, you are becoming a major star in our eyes. Your individualism, creativity, stylish looks, entrepreneurship, and cleverness makes us want more from you. The first time I noticed you was on Youtube. Noah's Arc was becoming a major thing in the press. Then I was browsing around the site, looking for interviews from the cast. Then I saw the interview you did with Jensen Atwood.

The moment I saw that interview, I didn't get enough of you. I check your website every single day. It's been added to my daily journalism list. Every day, I go your website to see the news. Then I watch new episodes of your show. Continue with great success B. Scott. We love you very much.

9. Finding Me: Cast and Crew

Now I have to acknowledge the entire cast and crew of the hit movie "Finding Me." I loved the movie. The acting was on point. Each story was addictive. I was never bored the least. For people who have not bought the movie, where have ya'll been. Faybien's story is something that everyone can relate to. Despite our sexuality, we have difficulties finding ourselves.

The thing I like about this film is that the relationships is nationwide. I have shown this to one of my friends who is straight, and he thought he was Faybien for a quick second. The minute I heard that, it came to me. This is not just for gay people. Any person can see themselves as any of these characters. Because of that, I give the cast and crew of "Finding Me" my deepest respect and support. You know I am going to see the sequel "Finding Me: Truth."

8. Rapper Bryn't

When it comes to music, I was listening to your music nonstop. I believe your music was the first music I've ever listened to that surrounded the gay community. The moment I heard your music, your mixtapes were in my IPod five minutes later. I listened to both mixtapes 5 times each in one day.

I kept my headphones on, and listened to every lyric on each track. I didn't want to miss a single message you were sending through your music. It's raw, creative, and original. Bryn't, your music is something that we need to listen. Just know that I am a fan, and I'll be supporting and listening to you till the day I die. 100% respect. Keep on doing what you do.

7. Xem Van Adams

Xem Van Adams is one of the inspiring people I have ever seen on a computer screen. From one writer to another, I love your work. I mostly read what you say than watch your videos. But either way, I love you. The thing I love about you is that you branch out to different things surrounding the community that we all keep on talking about. Not only that, but you show us your vulnerability to things in the world.

You give us these amazing stories because you've gone through the things you talk about. That is what I love about you. Your own individual success has become a journey that I watch nonstop. I know you wouldn't be here without a large group of people that help you out everyday. Tell all of them "Congratulations."

I've got nothing but love, respect, and support for you too. And I am looking forward to watching "The Blogger" when it comes on tv. Just like you said. You're Conquering the World One Word at a Time.

This is one of my favorite videos that I probably watch three times a week.

6. ADTV

Hands down, ADTV is one of my favorite shows right now. There is not a day that goes by when I never stop talking about the show. Derrick L. Briggs, Matthew Barrett, Ryan Drake, and J'Nara Corbin, you guys are doing a great job. I remember watching this show when it was just Derrick L. Briggs and Adam Benjamin Irby. Ever since then, I have seen it grown during each passing season.

It's become very informative surrounding the community. I love watching four different points of view. For me, I love it when I see four different perspectives of life come together to talk about the situation at hand. I grew up watching Oprah, The View, and Tyra. I loved watching sitcoms like Friends and Girlfriends. I guess that's why 4 is my favorite number. I love the realness of the show. You guys just always seem to come up with the best topics. One thing I saw while reading the comments is that people were going through a certain situation, and before you know it, an episode of your show comes on and it is talking about the situation at hand.

That's the reason why I love the show. You have my 100% support, love, and respect. And I am going getting this feeling that this is just the beginning for ADTV. Below is my favorite episode from you guys.

5. Adam Benjamin Irby

As I browse around the internet. There is not a day that goes by that I don't go check out the weblog of Adam Benjamin Irby. He has been called the "Carrie Bradshaw" in the gay community. I don't put him under that label. I call him "One of the greatest gay writers in the world." Adamsweblog.com is my day-to-day site. I literally go on his website everyday. If he doesn't have any new posts, I go check out the old ones.

What I love about you is your realness. You are not afraid to tell us these amazing stories. Each story makes me feel how I feel when I read a book. I am a fan of nonfiction books. When you talk about your life, you are not afraid to say what is going on around you. You are honest, raw, and creative with it. You are an amazing writer. As you continue to update your blog, I see how you grow as the days go by. Everyone's life is like a roller coaster. We all make mistakes and learn from it. Keep on writing dude. You have my 100% love, support, and respect.

4. The Cast of Drama Queenz

This series is becoming a major hit online. As it starts airing season 2, Drama Queenz continues to entertain me nonstop with it's stories. It's funny, entertaining, and purely original. For me, I kind of hate the comparisons it get from the tv show Noah's Arc. This show is something I have never seen before. Even Noah's Arc can't touch this. Three gay friends showing the life in New York City. I have never seen a show that did that before. This show stands out on it's own. Continue great success. Dane Joseph, Kristen-Alexzander Griffith, and Troy Valjean Rucker.

3. Dwight Allen O'Neal

I cannot do this list without acknowledging my good friend Dwight Allen O' Neal. I didn't put you on this just because you are my friend. I put you on this list personally and professionally. You are one of the greatest people I have ever known. Your ideas for these different shows are so amazing. Dating Dwight, Christopher Street, and Dishing It With Dwight. I am so happy to see you grow, and you're individualism makes you shine that an forever-lighting star. My heart races every time I think about you. Friend to friend, I give you all the love I have. I am looking forward to watching more episodes of Christopher Street and the second season of Dating Dwight. I keep on watching the current episodes nonstop.

2. Nathan "Seven" Scott

Nathan, Nathan, Nathan! Sometimes I still wonder how the heck we walked into each others lives? Then I remember it like it was yesterday. We got connected when I was doing my talk show on Youtube Zolra's Corner at the time. You were doing The & Show the same time as well. I forgot who sent a message to whom first. But I so happy we met. Because of that, I have found someone I consider a mentor.

Like you said, you was born to lead. You like to lead projects. What I love about you is that you listen to everyone until every word leaves the mouth. When you are listening to ideas from three different people, you have a way of combining all three of them together and create something that we all can relate to. Now that you are doing "We Are The Media" now, I continue to watch you succeed. You have become a perfect partner and perfect friend. You listen when I'm happy. You listen to me when I cry. You even listen to be when I feel alone. I am so happy you are in my life. Now you're about to make me cry in a quick second!

1. My Future Forward Family

From the moment I started doing this, I already knew who I was going to pick as #1. Throughout the whole year, The Future Forward has become family to me. Ever since Nathan offered me to write for the site, it automatically started to feel like family. I may write for different websites and blogs now, but none of them can make me feel the way I feel about this site.

Nathan Seven Scott, Dwight Allen O' Neal, Cornelius Jones Jr.,
Lil Mogul Richard E. Pelzer II, and Waddie J. You have no idea how much I feel about you guys. It makes me cry everytime I'm working for the site. I love each and every one of ya'll at the bottom of my heart. What each of ya'll contribute makes me proud of having good friends that loves to do what they aspire to become. Being 18 years old, I feel lucky that I have met you guys. I can't wait till I move there to New York. So that I squeeze each and every one of ya'll, and show you how much I love you guys.

2010 has arrived, and I look forward to what we are bring The Future too.
