We Want Peace by Emmanuel Jal

On January 9th, 2011 a referendum will determine whether Southern Sudan should remain a part of Sudan. 80% of Sudan's oil fields are in the south, making it a prime battleground to displace the indigenous people. Both North and South are preparing for war, leaving innocent people at grave risk of major human rights violations. The last civil war between North and South – in which Emmanuel Jal fought as a child soldier – claimed over 2 million lives (including that of Emmanuel’s own mother). Take Action.

The time to prevent another genocide is now. The single We Want Peace is a call for peace, protection and justice for all in Sudan and also for an end to conflicts affecting innocent people all around the world.

Striking While it's Hot: Are Artists Releasing Albums Too Fast?

Shortly after Kanye debuted his video for "Runaway,"  I read an article that mentioned how he had returned to music after a year long hiatus after the VMA incident.  Seriously, it's only been a year, not like he was out of sight for years.  Now, a hiatus can be appropriately applied to Lauryn Hill or D'Angelo.  A year seems to be a reasonable amount of time between albums.  However, lately I've noticed many artists, especially fairly new ones, don't even give their last album time to cool down before they drop another one.

I remember there was a time when artists would leave you in anticipation (well, maybe not like a Sade 10-year anticipation) waiting for their album to drop.  Artists would release an album, space out its singles and then end it with a tour.  Instead, some artists are dropping an album and releasing several singles in a short time frame.  To me, this shortens the life span or popularity of the album because people get tired of it faster.  Then you turn around for 10 secs and they're releasing another album.

Whatever happened to longevity?  Is that not a concern or goal of an artist anymore?  I guess they rather strike while it's hot and get all they can out of the moment when they're on top, climbing the charts and worry about how long they'll stay there later.

Even though Sade's appearances are to the extreme, she has proven longevity and despite the 10 year gap, leaves her fans wanting more.  In the April edition of Ebony Magazine, Sade states “I’ve had my ups and downs in the years between these albums.  That’s partly why I’m able to write songs that people in some way can hear. I express feelings, real feelings.”  How can one write about their life experiences and have diverse lyrical content if you're always on the road?  Wait, maybe it's because they probably don't write their own material. . . just a thought.

Here's what I mean. . .

Trey Songz

3rd album, Ready, dropped in August 2009
Singles released:
I Need a Girl - April 2009
LOL Smiley Face - August 2009
I Invented Sex - October 2009
Say Aah - January 2010
Neighbors Know My Name - February 2010

He also opened for Jay-Z on his "The Blueprint 3 Tour" from October - November 2009 which further promoted his album.

4th album, Passion, Pain, & Pleasure, released September 2010
    Singles released:
    Bottoms Up - July 2010
    Can't Be Friends - September 2010

Went back on the road to promote this album through the "Passion, Pain & Pleasure Tour" over the summer starting August 2010.

Even though it has been a year between his 2 albums, it doesn't feel that long because singles from his 2009 album were still being released the following year. This results in a 6 month lap between the last single released off his 2009 album and the first single to promo his 2010 album.

      Right When I'M Pretty

When is wrong right? When some one attractive does the wrong, like Angelina Jolie? This weekend I saw Ms. Jolie’s new film Salt and she did an amazing job, it was actually one of the best action films I think I have ever watched. After the movie ended one of my friends commented on how he was so glad that she stole Brad Pitt from Jennifer Anniston and I could only shake my head, from hearing this so often. When I asked why I was not surprised by his response, he feels that since she is prettier that it is okay. What is wrong with our society, just because someone is attractive and famous it is okay for them to get away with something that is morally wrong?

There have been several celebrity mishaps and the funny thing about most of them is the attractive ones society just feels as though it is ok for them to do wrong. Look at the Fantasia incident, now grant it this young woman does have talent, but since she isn’t considered a natural beauty people ripped into her over having an affair with a married man. Now grant it I am not justifying what Fantasia did; however why not live for her like society lives for these other women who have stolen someone else’s husband. Another example that we cannot forget is how Mrs. Alicia Keys Beatz, stole someone’s husband, got pregnant, and now is officially his wife and America is blissfully happy for her and her husband, when his ex sits in her beauty salon bi-weekly still crying over him. When do we stop looking at people’s fame and looks and start holding them accountable for wrong? Wrong is wrong and we should judge people on their actions not their looks.

It was a Celebrity Wedding Weekend

How Romantic!! These Lovebirds, and expectant parents, Harlem lady Alicia Keys and Swizz Beatz (real name Kasseem Dean) ran away together and got married on the French Island of Corsica yesterday, Saturday the 31st July. It was a very low-key wedding with only their closest friends, family and A-list stars including U2 rocker Bono and Queen Latifah, who was there to show their support for the couple.

When they arrived on the Mediterranean Island, several days early, they enjoyed the beach and sunshine before making their commitment to love each other forever in a ceremony in Corsica, France. The absolutely beautiful Alicia Keys looked radiant in a flowing white gown, with a sweet little baby bump, and a diamond encrusted headband on the day of her wedding to Swizz Beatz, who was wearing a white tuxedo jacket, pink shirt, bow tie for their big day and shades.

This sweet newlywed couple is expecting their first baby together this November, they could not be happier about beginning a family together.

It was the wedding of the decade and now we finally have some of the amazing details of Chelsea Clinton's nuptials. Despite conspiracy theories that Rhinebeck was a "decoy" location to throw off the press, the wedding was indeed held at Astor Courts in Rhinebeck, NY.

Chelsea said her "I dos" to Marc Mezvinsky under a flower chuppah outdoors on a picturesque afternoon. Details of the rest of the evening are beginning to emerge. One includes the current Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton, and her husband, former president Bill Clinton, being hoisted in chairs above a dancing crowd at the reception, as is typical at Jewish weddings. According to the Washington Post, other notable moments include when Chelsea reminded the minister of the next verse when an unexpected breeze turned the page in his book too soon, and when the bride traded her strapless Vera Wang ballgown for a slinkier white dress and took to the floor for a cute choreographed first dance to "At Last." (Bill danced with Chelsea to "The Way You Look Tonight" for their father-daughter number).

Lavish? Definitely. The guest list totaled around 400 people, several of whom stayed at the Delamater Inn and took chartered buses to the wedding. Chelsea reportedly had 12 bridesmaids who wore plum sashes around their custom Vera Wang gowns, and nearly as many groomsmen on Marc's side.
