The Original Supermodels Turn 40 and Looking Fabulous

On August 25th, Claudia Schiffer -- the youngest of the crop of so-called "original supermodels" who made their mark on fashion in the late 1980s and early 1990s -- will turn the big 4-0. To celebrate, InStyle took a look back at the top six, and offers updates as to where they are now.

Claudia Schiffer, 40

Then: Schiffer was only 17 when Karl Lagerfeld enlisted her to model for Chanel; a subsequent ad campaign for Guess played up her resemblance to the actress Brigitte Bardot and turned her into an international star.

Now: The German-born model, who's married to filmmaker Matthew Vaughn (he directed "Kick-Ass"), recently gave birth to her third child and continues to pose part-time for brands like Chanel, Ferragamo, Alberta Ferretti (she's the face of their signature fragrance) and Yves St. Laurent.

Cindy Crawford, 44

Then: The all-American Crawford appeared on hundreds of magazine covers. She also pitched Pepsi, hosted the MTV series "House of Style," and married the movie star Richard Gere. (They divorced four years later.)

Now: Re-married in 1998 to businessman Rande Gerber, Crawford has launched several successful businesses of her own, including an eponymous Home Collection and a line of anti-aging skincare products called Meaningful Beauty.

Naomi Campbell, 40

Then: Discovered at 15 while window-shopping in London's Covent Garden, Campbell quickly went from being an in-demand catwalk star to posing for numerous magazine covers, many of which had never before featured a black model. She represented Nars, Ralph Lauren, and Prada, appeared in music videos for Madonna, Michael Jackson, and the Notorious B.I.G., and dated Mike Tyson, Robert DeNiro, and Eric Clapton.

Now: Although plagued by personal scandals, Campbell is still a fashion-world star. Next month, Dolce & Gabbana will celebrate "the 25th anniversary of her career" with a party and limited edition T-shirts (proceeds will benefit her charity, Fashion For Relief.)

Linda Evangelista, 45

Then: Canadian-born Evangelista got her start when she was spotted by a talent agent at a Miss Teen Niagara pageant in 1978. Ten years later, she lost a number of major runway bookings when she suddenly swapped her then-shoulder-length hair for a boyish, close-cropped style, but her ever-changing 'do eventually became her trademark. A face of Revlon, Donna Karan, and Versace, she famously told a reporter in 1990 that she and her supermodel colleagues "don't get out of bed for less than $10,000 a day."

Now: Evangelista has worked more or less steadily for the last twenty years -- recent gigs include ad campaigns for Prada, Talbots, and John Galliano.

Elle Macpherson, 47

Then: A leggy blonde Australian known within the industry as "The Body," Macpherson appeared on the cover of the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue a record five times. She also kept a foot in the high-fashion world, walking runways for designers like Azzedine Alaia and John Galliano.

Now: The model-turned-entrepreneur's signature lingerie line, Elle Macpherson Intimates, is a best-selling success, stocked at Bloomindales, Saks Fifth Avenue, and Neiman Marcus. She's also launched a skincare collection, called (of course) "The Body," and recently became the host of "Britain's Next Top Model." And, in March, she made a triumphant return to the runway, closing Louis Vuitton's buzzed-about Fall 2010 show.

Christy Turlington, 41

Then: A face of Missoni, Valentino, Chanel, Revlon, and Calvin Klein, Turlington starred, alongside Linda, Cindy, and Naomi, in George Michael's model-packed video for "Freedom! 90."

Now: The yoga devotee has launched two active-wear brands, Nuala and Mahnuala, and is a partner in the all-natural ayurvedic skincare line, Sundari. This year, Turlington -- who's married to actor/director Ed Burns -- released a documentary, "No Woman No Cry," about at-risk pregnant women around the world and co-starred with models Karen Elson and Natalia Vodianova in Louis Vuitton's Fall 2010 campaign.

Naomi Campbell’s Fashion for Relief

By Seven Brown

Backstage at a Bryant Park fashion show there is never a dull moment, Friday afternoon was no exception. Everywhere I looked there was hair, make up, clothes, nails … the works. This particular show was special to me because I was able to be a part of something really big that will help many people in such a huge way. For the fourth year in a row, Naomi Campbell rolled out the red carpet and hosted the star studded runway event–
Fashion for Relief.. All day, the energy in the tent was charged with excitement and anticipation as the celebrity cast strut the runway. Sarah Ferguson, Duchess of York, hosted… designers donated clothing, all to benefit Haiti’s mothers and children. Later this month, the clothing will be auctioned online and 100% of the proceeds and ticket sales go directly to CARE. An organization that fights poverty and defends the dignity of women by empowering women to live, learn and earn. Naomi is a global champion for safe motherhood and serves as ambassador to the White Ribbon Alliance. Some of the sponsors of the night including IMG, NET A PORTER, Maybelline and American Express. Kevin Krier & Associates took on the production duties and Rachel Zoe served as stylist. When it is all said and done 100% of clothing sales, ticket sales, and donations go directly to the charity. Some of the past recipients of Fashion for Relief were victims of Hurricane Katrina, Rotary Flood and Disaster Appeal, and the White Ribbon Alliance. Get your tee-shirts and wear it proudly. Peek backstage, hear what Naomi had to say…

High Heels, 1. Model, 0

Good news for the girls... It looks like runway tumbles are an equal-opportunity employer.

Just ask this male model at Vivienne Westwood during the menswear fashion shows in Milan. The catwalker hit the floor during the show and had to be helped up by a fellow model. And to really add insult to injury, he had to wear bright orange pants in public. (Side note: Is it just us or is everyone in the front row smirking and smiling? Ice-cold!) Of course, given that the theme for Westwood's Autumn/Winter 2010 show was the Homeless (really!), we wouldn't be surprised if the trip was all part of the act. The madcap designer also sent models down the runway with shopping carts and plastic bags, so we wouldn't put it past her.

It's been a bad week for runway models. This catwalker slipped out of her shoes at Berlin Fashion Week.

High Heels, 1. Model, 0

Model Barbara Meier suffered an embarrassing misstep (literally) as she walked the runway at last week's Lena Hoschek A/W 2010 show during Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in Berlin, accidentally losing one of her high-heeled pumps mid-catwalk. But what she lacks in sticky feet, Meier -- who won the second season of "Germany's Next Topmodel" -- made up for in poise, calmly stepping out of the wayward shoe and then removing the second pump before completing her runway turn.

On her way back the model picked up the runaway heels and tucked them behind her back like a champ. We'll cop to a whiff of disappointment after failing to see yet another case of runway roadkill, but mostly we're impressed at Meier's ability to keep her cool. Guess she was "sole"-trained? Next time, maybe she'll Krazy Glue those suckers.

Meanwhile, see the terrifying heels that made three models quit the Alexander McQueen show.

There comes a time when a gal's just gotta put her foot down. Or not, as it were.

So when Alexander McQueen called on his Spring/Summer 2010 runway models to slip on his death-defying, 10-inch-tall Armadillo shoes, catwalkers Abbey Lee Kershaw, Natasha Poly and Sasha Pivovarova quit the show in protest, Kershaw tells Frockwriter. Who says models are dumb?

Kershaw can't be blamed for erring on the side of caution. The model stumbled at Rodarte last September, had to sit out part of the Fall/Winter '09 shows due to a knee injury caused by another footwear-related near-miss, and even fainted thanks to a suffocating corset at McQueen's Spring/Summer '09 show last year, according to the source.

Yikes!!! We hope the poor thing has insurance.

But while Kershaw, Poly and Pivovarova may have 86'd McQueen's controversial kicks, style stars like Daphne Guinness and Lady Gaga have braved the monstrous heels sans bloodshed. Heck, Guinness even marveled to Fashionista at the time that the straight-from-the-runway shoes were "quite light." We'll just have to take her word for it. Those beasts give us nightmares. Meanwhile, the Armadillo isn't the only shoe getting snubbed. Find out why Stuart Weitzman is ditching his million-dollar shoe.

However, remember back when in 1994 Naomi Campbell tumbles for us... again it was that sneaky legendary designer Vivienne Westwood.
