Night Catches Us

In 1976, after years of mysterious absence, Marcus (Anthony Mackie, “The Hurt Locker”) returns to the Philadelphia neighborhood where he came of age in the midst of the Black Power movement. While his arrival raises suspicion among his family and former neighbors, he finds acceptance from his old friend Patricia (Kerry Washington, “Ray,” “Lift”) and her daughter. However, Marcus quickly finds himself at odds with the organization he once embraced, whose members suspect he orchestrated the slaying of their former comrade-in-arms. In a startling sequence of events, Marcus must protect a secret that could shatter everyone's beliefs as he rediscovers his forbidden passion for Patricia.

LeBron James Video: Watch Eerily Prophetic Michael Jordan-'Rise' Mashup

LeBron James and the Miami Heat aren't exactly having the season that they had hoped for ever since the "Big Three" took their talents to South Beach.

Miami has a 9-8 record, and even though it's still early in the season, it won't be winning a championship with the way it's been playing lately.

To put things into perspective, the Cleveland Cavaliers were 12-5 at this point last season.

LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh are all excellent individual athletes, but something isn't clicking in Miami.

Earlier this season, LeBron James and Nike made a commercial in which James asked "What should I do?" and it was met with mixed reviews.

Now this "mash-up" with Michael Jordan's "Maybe It's My Fault" commercial has been circulating all over the Internet, and the final line pretty much sums up many fans' feelings regarding "King James" and the way he has dealt with criticism:

"Or maybe you're just making excuses."

It is still too early to tell whether the Miami Heat will become the dynasty that it has been hyped up to be, but if it continues down the path it's on, it could be a very long season.

Don't Sleep: Emily King

Don't Sleep:  A feature post that presents artists or albums the media has basically slept on and should've gotten some props.

By J9 of J9's MusicLife

I came across singer/songwriter Emily King in 2007 while watching VH1 Soul one day.  After seeing the video for her first single, Walk In My Shoes I had to find out more about her.  My immediate Google search took me to her Myspace page where I listened to other tracks.  I fell in love with her music and it took me visiting three stories to buy her debut album East Side Story.  The album was so good it was a Grammy nominee for Best Contemporary R&B Album.  Everyone I've recommended the album too LOVES it.  However, I wish I had the ability to tell the world because there are many who have slept on the album.

Emily, the child of two jazz musicians, also plays the guitar which adds to her incredible talent.  You can hear her play throughout the album, especially on the song "Business Man" where she talks about heartless capitalists.  Emily brings such realness and emotion to her songs which allows the listener to really feel and relate to her words.

Origin: New York City
Debut Album: East Side Story (Released in 2007)
Record Label:  Free Agent (Formerly signed to J Records)

Threesomes: Good or Bad?

After having a conversation with a friend of mine, I started thinking about relationships once again. This is a particular person that surprises me. He is a few decades older than me, and he is also interested in dating me. The second day we met, he was already interested in getting my cakes. Of course I blocked him for getting in, not because he is way odler than me, but because I am the committed type. I want to be friends first before anything crazy happens.

Today, I went to his office to help him out. As the day gone by, he surely did need my help. There were so many customers that walked in, getting their Halloween costumes t the last minute. Sometimes, it surprises me on how people tend to do things at the last minute.

Once the night arrives, him and I had another one of those conversations. He is meeting with someone for the night and he just can't wait to meet this guy. He showed me pictures on his cell phone. The man on the line is really hot.

"He's a cute guy," I said.

"I think we can be able to do a threesome tonight," he responded hysterically.

He knew he was joking, but it was just another example of him getting into my jeans. Once the conversation was over, it got me thinking about relationships, especially in the LGBT community. Threesomes are running rapidly around the world. It seems like it's starting to be the next sexual frontier. The two of them are not dating. They are great friends and that's why he considered me the triangle of threesomes.

In most gay relationships, threesomes are increasing in numbers. Even though only two of them is the couple while the third person is an accessory, they are still interested in it. However, it's another story if the three people are only friends. When you are the person who only believes in love within two individuals and are against threesomes while your mate or friend is interested in it, it becomes difficult.

After the conversation I had with my friend, it got me thinking.

Are threesomes the new sexual frontier or is it a fantasy that will destroy future relationships if it materializes to become a permanent part of our everyday lives?

Everyone's Talking About Janelle Monae

By J9 of J9's MusicLife

Seems like everyday someone comes to me asking about Janelle Monae. . .

Have you heard of this chick named Janelle Monae?
Do you like Janelle Monae?
Do you have her album?
Have you seen her perform live before?

After replying YES to all of the above questions, I have to remind folks that I knew of her before the BET Awards, before The ArchAndroid . . .I was the one talking about Janelle Monae two years ago when her debut album Metropolis: The Chase Suite was released.  I was the one telling people they needed to listen yet people either ignored me and/or disregarded what I was saying.  Now, people are starting to recognize and come to their senses . . .can I say. . . I TOLD YOU SO!!!

But hey, it's better late than never!  It gives me great pleasure to see people are coming around and looking past her eccentric ways to see her true talent.  She isn't just creating an image just because and acting a fool like some other artists out there.

Just recently, I was talking to a friend about Janelle Monae and mentioned she was going to be in DC.  My friend went, became an instant fan and brought her album.  That tells me my job is done!  Check out my friend minikristen's review of the concert, here.

With all these inquires about Janelle Monae, I thought it was necessary to revisit the "Don't Sleep" post I did on her a while back for those who are still sleeping and need that wake up call . . .

"Janelle's sound cannot be clearly defined as she incorporates soul, electronic, hip-hop, and indie rock into her music.  Besides her unique look and sound, Janelle brilliantly uses the art of storytelling to convey real-life messages through a futuristic fantasy world."  To read the full post, click here.

Also, check out my review of her performance at the Summer Spirit Festival.

If after all of that, you're still on the fence and unsure about Janelle, I suggest you take a look below at her latest video for the song "Coldwar".  The simplistic imagery in the video allows you to just focus on the message she conveys. . . .one of the most deepest videos I've seen in a long time!
