What is "Broke-ology?"
The study of being broke. The art of being broke.
Broke-ology is a new play written by playwright and Julliard Alumn Nathan Louis Jackson. Jackson premiered his play, to excellent reviews, last summer at the Williamstown Theatre Festival. Last week I had the opportunity of experiencing this extremely moving play and really understood the depth of the title and the story.
Currently running at Lincoln Center's Mitzi Newhouse Theatre, Broke-ology is about the King family who have weathered the hardships of life and survived with their love for each other intact. The father lives in the house the boys grew up in. He's alone, but he maintains his allegiance with their mother in his own way. When the brothers are called home to take care of him, they find themselves strangely at odds.
Wendell Pierce, Francois Battiste, Allano Miller, and Crystal A. Dickinson all star in this skillfully
crafted play. Each performer gives an honest and warm portrayal of the character lives, which feel so close to home. The set is simple, and is an authentic illustration of how life is really lived when one is treading the lines of "broke" and barely surviving in the world.
Nathan Louis Jackson has a gift for crafting finely written dialogue that flows so fluid like normal conversations amongst simple living people. The story speaks to the depth of love for self, for family, and connectedness. And it was so gratifying to see this warm portrayal of a family of Black Men, maintaining their loyalty and love to each other.
Broke-ology is the art of great storytelling. I highly recommend this play with out reservation.
