Arts.Advocacy+Wellness: "For Colored Girls..."

I think I was one of thousands New Yorkers eagerly awaiting the arrival of, For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow Is Enuf, which was slated to open on Broadway this year, but unfortunately cancelled its run. It was speculated its cancellation was due to the fall of the financial climate in the U.S. At a time when the advid theater-goer, like myself, is yearning for Broadway shows with more depth, the news of For Colored Girls... being cancelled was heartbreaking.

Well it seems that a few well-known and amazing theater veterans, down south, have chosen to rise against the ailing economy by taking a strong leap of faith, in mounting this very prolific and inspiring production of Ntazake Shange's For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow Is Enuf.

Directed by Broadway star and television actress, Jasmine Guy, Ntozake Shange's legendary choreopoem about the African-American female journey through America is portrayed through the poetry, dancing and narrative of a slate of women who become the colorful ladies of the rainbow. Both a joyous celebration of a unique culture and a wrenchingly real portrait of the struggle of an oppressed minority, For Colored Girls... tells the timeless story through 20 beautiful vignettes that inspire laughter and tears for the passion and pain of the black woman's experience.

Directed by Jazmine Guy
Starring Nicole Ari Parker, Crystal Fox, and Robin Givens
